Global Mar crude steel production down 4.3% YoY, WSA

Crude steel production across 71 countries totaled 161 million tonnes in March, falling 4.3% from a year earlier, showed data from the World Steel Association (WSA).

 

In March, the top ten crude steel producers were China, India, Japan, the U.S., Russia, South Korea, Germany, Turkey, Brazil and Iran.

 

China remained the top producer, with output at 88.3 million tonnes, down 7.8% year on year. India ranked second with production of 12.7 million tonnes, a 7.8% rise on the year, and Japan the third, 7.2 million tonnes, down 3.9%.

 

Over March, crude steel output of the U.S. amounted to 6.9 million tonnes, steady year on year, and the output in Russia was estimated to rise 0.8% from a year ago to 6.6 million tonnes. Crude steel output in South Korea declined 9.5% from the previous year to 5.3 million tonnes, while that of Germany increased 8.4% to 3.5 million tonnes, data showed.

 

Crude steel production in Turkey grew 18.0% year on year to 3.2 million tonnes, and that of Brazil and Iran was both 2.8 million tonnes, up 5.6% and 2.0% from the year before, respectively.

 

Crude steel output worldwide witnessed a year-on-year increase of 0.5% to 469 million tonnes in the first three months this year.

 

During the period, China, India, Japan, the U.S. and Russia respectively produced 257 million tonnes (-1.9% YoY), 37.3 million tonnes (+9.7% YoY), 21.5 million tonnes (-0.8% YoY), 19.9 million tonnes (-1.6% YoY) and 18.7 million tonnes (-0.2% YoY).

 

Crude steel production in South Korea, Germany, Turkey, Brazil and Iran totaled 16.2 million tonnes (-2.5% YoY), 9.7 million tonnes (+6.0% YoY), 9.5 million tonnes (+28.4% YoY), 8.3 million tonnes (+6.2% YoY) and 7.6 million tonnes (+16.3% YoY), respectively.
